Big Book Study Guide

How it Works

1. Open your Big Book to the Preface, Page XI. Read this page. (Because the Big: Book is a textbook, the information is presented in a logical sequence. We recommend that you begin at the beginning, rather than pick and choose pages at random,' so that you may gain the most from your Big Book studies.)

2. Turn in the Study Guide to the page number that matches the page you have just read in the Big Book, Page XI. (Page numbers in your Guide Book match the page numbers in the Third Edition of the Big Book.)

3. Answer each question in the Study Guide, referring to the Big Book for the correct answer.

NOTE: There is transparent plastic line guide will help you answer the questions. Here's, an example of how to use the line guide. Let’s say that you have already opened your Big Book to Page XI, the Preface. Align the plastic line guide so that it is immediately below the top line of type on the page, which reads: "This is the third edition of the book, 'Alcoholics'." Now look at the first question in the Study Guide for Page XI: "l. What has the book become? PXI L7-8." Check the line guide for the correct answer on lines 7-8: "...this book has become the basic text for our society..."

4. After you answer the questions, use a highlighter marker or a pencil to underline words and phrases in the Big Book that you want to recall or study at a later time.

5. Write notes in the margins of your Big Book pages so that you can refer to them in the future.

It's That Easy!
And studying this way will help you achieve a working knowledge and a deeper understanding of the textbook for your recovery. By following this simple formula,. You will not only help yourself, but you will be able to help other alcoholics when you progress to Twelfth Step work.
